Provincetown

A Winter Laboratory for the Arts

- New Arts Festival Highlights Winter Work of Artists -

From Wednesday, May 1 through Sunday, May 5, Spring Arts Showcase will serve as a preview for the creative winter work of Provincetown artists in a series of exhibitions, performances, open studios, readings and other special events for presenting new work - the experimental, expressive, and risky work that keeps Provincetown a thriving, vital and influential arts community.

On Saturday and Sunday, over 40 artists will open their studios to the public.  Open Studio Maps and Schedules of Events will be available at the Chamber of Commerce, the Provincetown Arts Association and Museum, Fine Arts Work Center, Angel Foods, Joe's Coffee, Lemba's Health Foods, Little Deb's Cafe.

Maps and schedules will be distributed to popular stops up and down the Cape, in Boston neighborhoods and will be available by email as well.

In summer and winter, they have gathered here -- poets, novelists, painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians, actors, film-makers, conceptual artists, performers, multi-media artists -- art-makers of all genre, emerging, and of international statue.  These are the working artists of Provincetown.

The Town continues to thrive as an art colony because citizens find the quiet winter months, and the close community that time and isolation foster, conducive to productive work.  Our artists find the often harsh, extreme weather and natural environment an inspiration to their work.  The Atlantic and its winds, its tides and dunes and light, may be packaged and sold as tourist attractions in the summer, but they remain geographical facts, and the real life place of the year-rounder. The art we make reflects this environment.  Come summer, the work ends and the selling, the exhibition, the performance begins.

New visitors and long time Provincetown-lovers are invited to spend a little glorious springtime with us and see Provincetown as the winter laboratory for the arts that she really is.

A SCHEDULE OF SPECIFIC PROGRAM EVENTS WILL FOLLOW SHORTLY.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT THIS NEW EVENT.
